Your first dive: Test of Details

This 15-20 minute walkthrough will get you running your first Test of Details from start to finish.

Before you start

Make sure you have a project with documents in your Workspace. If you haven't set this up yet, see Set up your first project.

Step 1: Prepare your documents

Make sure your Workspace contains the documents you'll be testing against (invoices, contracts, etc.). If you synced from SharePoint, verify the files have finished processing.

Step 2: Upload your reference document

Prepare an Excel file containing the transactions you want to test. This is your reference document — the list of items Moby will verify against supporting documents.

Step 3: Create and run the TOD

  1. Go to Tests of Details in the sidebar
  2. Click New Test
  3. Select your reference document and supporting documents
  4. Configure the matching criteria
  5. Click Run and wait 10-15 min for Moby to process

Step 4: Review and finalize

Once Moby completes the analysis, you'll review the results, make manual adjustments if needed, and export.

Track your progress

Two progress bars help you track completion:

Progress BarWhat it tracks
Documents MatchedAre all documents processed? Unmatched documents must be matched manually or excluded if not needed.
Control ProgressHave all cells been validated? Validated = confirmed correct.

Review and validate cells

Click on any cell to see the grounding — the exact location in the source document where Moby found the value. To validate:

  1. Select cells (use Ctrl + Click to select multiple)
  2. Click the Validate button (✓) in the toolbar
Detach the PDF viewer

For more comfort, detach the PDF preview into a separate tab or window. This lets you view the document full-screen while keeping the results table visible.

Make manual edits

If Moby extracted incorrect data or missed a match:

  • Edit a cell — Double-click to modify the value
  • Manual match — Use the match button to link a document to a transaction
  • Exclude documents — Mark irrelevant documents as excluded so they don't affect your progress
Quick tip

The grounding feature is your best friend for audit documentation. It provides visual proof of every extracted value's source location.

Step 5: Export to Excel

Once both progress bars are complete, click Export to generate your audit-ready Excel file.

For a more integrated experience, use the Moby Excel Add-in — it brings your results and grounding directly into Excel, letting you view source documents side-by-side with your data.
